Just Giving Back to Impact the Community

CCASAP - Calloway County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention

There is no greater opportunity to serve than to help support a local initiative dedicated to the education and active reduction of substance abuse.  In 2003 CCASAP changed its name from KY-ASAP which was organized September 2001.  Our United Way enlists one or more board members to serve on their board and to work with CCASAP in whatever area of need they may have.  Through active participation in this initiative, our organization provides support in purging one of the largest consuming problems experienced in communities today-substance abuse.  Visit their website at http://www.ccasap.com

Community of Promise- National Youth Initiative

United Way volunteers were vital in the organization of the Community of Promise in Murray / Calloway County.  In 2001 Murray/ Calloway County was named one of only 13 Communities of Promise in the State of Kentucky. United Way as well as other community volunteers led two specific Youth Summits that were instrumental in providing our local community vital data to build futures upon.

Through the years, concentrated effort by “various clandestine volunteers” as well as newly formed efforts, the National America’s Promise dubbed Murray / Calloway County as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People.

CUBS – Calloway United Benevolent Services

On a regular basis CUBS meets to address and plan action-based improvement for community issues.  CUBS provides needed services for all of Calloway County.  Programs include a Community Resource Fair, Santa Project, Transitional Home, World’s Biggest Baby Shower, Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Angels Community Clinic.  CUBS consists of community leaders, local agencies, faith, governmental, non-profit, business, and educational representatives. United Way assists in organizing these meetings as well as seeking solutions and actions that address and help CUBS improve our community.

Freedom Fest- A Community Celebration of Activities

Freedom Fest started with a 4th of July Parade in the late 1980’s. This event has bloomed into an extended celebration of our local community and American heritage. United Way helps organize the festivity’s Parade which is just one highlight in the several day event.

Reality Store and Character Counts

Our local education system as well as wide spread community of volunteers help invest in our youth through Reality Store and Character Counts.  Reality Store is an event to help our youth experience their impending adulthood by using simulated life experiences such as job interviews and adult situations to teach them future lessons in life.  Character Counts is an ongoing initiative to teach children about five basic character traits which can prepare them for successful futures in their community.  United Way’s vast group of giving and talented volunteers help provide assistance at both these events.
