Mission Statement

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Murray/Calloway County strives to enhance the lives of children by providing positive adult role models who offer hope, support, skills, encouragement and friendship that empower children to change their lives.

Services Provided

School Based Program:  Volunteers are matched with children in both the Calloway County and Murray School Systems to provide a one to one Mentoring relationship.  Volunteers visit at school or school-related functions only, one hour per week during the school year as scheduled with the teacher during the match meeting.  They spend 50% of their time there with academic needs and the other 50% building the relationship.

Community Based Program:  Volunteers that have been matched for 3 months in the School Based program may want to become a part of this program once the relationship develops.  After home visits and interviews with both the volunteer and parents/child, the volunteer can come to the child's home to pick him/her up and go to the park , a movie, the library or other fun locations.  The volunteer continues to work with academic needs while enjoying a greater variety of fun activities with the child.

Waiting List Activities:  Often there are planned activities for the children not yet matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister such as Movie night, "Meet Your Match," Play Day in the Park, or others.

Volunteer Screening:  All adult volunteers are thoroughly screened by an hour interview/orientation process upon entry.  They must be approved by both a Criminal Records check and a Social Service Background check.

Case Management:  The Case Manger is required to do consistent follow up with all participants in the program to ensure that the match is beneficial to all, ie volunteers, parents and children.

Age Group Served

Children ages 5 to 13 can be enrolled in the program by parent enrollment, teacher referral and other community agency referral.  Once a child is enrolled and matched, he/she can remain in the program until their high school graduation.
